TCM Therapeutic Actions:
Relieves intestinal dryness; relieves blocked bowels; relieves Blood and Yin deficiency; clears Heat in the Lower Warmer and disperses Wind.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated during pregnancy. Caution in breast-feeding: Rhubarb can pass through breast milk, causing colic and diarrhea in the child. Caution: This formula can become habitual when taken alone. May cause mild abdominal cramping in sensitive patients.
TCM Contraindications:
Not recommended in patients who do not have constipation or blood stagnation. Not for constipation due to excess heat. Use caution with abdominal distention, Spleen deficiency, or diarrhea.
Pharmaceutical Interactions:
May increase anticoagulant and antiplatelet effects; use cautiously with these types of agents as well as thrombolytic agents and low molecular weight heparins.
May have estrogen-like activity.
May cause potassium loss and increase toxicity of cardiac glycosides.
Use cautiously with laxatives, as synergistic effects may cause excessive diarrhea, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance.
Recommended Usage:
2-3 tablets twice daily with warm water.
