From Hemorrhoids to Depression… 5/5 (35)

Talk about an AMAZING herbal formula that treats a large realm of symptoms. Can you find any “one” prescription in Western medicine that can treat both DEPRESSION and/or HEMORRHOIDS? How is this possible? In Chinese medicine we do not treat the symptom—but instead, we treat the imbalance causing the symptom to occur. The pattern responsible for both hemorrhoids and depression in TCM is Spleen Qi Sinking.

The spleen channel energy has many functions.

spleen energy

  • Transforms food and fluids from the stomach
  • Controls the blood
  • Controls the muscles and the four limbs
  • Controls the rising of qi—which holds organs up
  • Controls thoughts

Spleen Qi Sinking is caused by excessive Spleen Qi Deficiency. Hemorrhoids occur when spleen qi is not strong enough to hold the blood in the vessels. A patient who complains of depression with the pattern of Spleen Qi Sinking may describe their emotions with words such as “down in the dumps,” unable to “lift” their spirits, or feelings of heavy-heartedness.

Bu Zhong Yi Qi Pian—SP 201 is the classic formula for Spleen Qi Sinking. This formula treats an array of symptoms that fall under the same pattern.

Recently I had a 67-year-old female patient present in my office for the treatment of depression. There can be many causes for depression in TCM, so I did a thorough evaluation to come up with a pattern diagnoses. By the end of the initial intake, I found an array of symptoms that led me to believe she had Spleen Qi Deficiency along with Spleen Qi Sinking.

  • Depression for most of her life
  • Hemorrhoids during childbearing years and beyond
  • Vaginal prolapse
  • Bloating, gas, and digestive disorders
  • Weight problems over the years
  • Heavy achy limbs
  • Low energy
  • Slippery pulse
  • Scalloped edges on her tongue

Here is a picture of one of her first graphs:

I treated her weekly with acupuncture for the first four weeks, then once every two weeks for the next four weeks. She took Bu Zhong Yi Qi Pian—201SP for the entire treatment cycle.

Here is what her final graph looked like.

After two months of treatment, and three months of Bu Zhong Yi Qi Pian—201 SP, she informed me that she is doing great—depression is gone, digestion is better, and hemorrhoids are doing better than they have for years. With one simple AcuHerb formula she was able to avoid anti-depressants and Preparation H! Just like I said… AMAZING!

    1. If you cannot use herbal formulas in your country, then acupuncture may be your only source of treatment. Possibly you have herbal formulas in your own country that you can safely prescribe? Each patient is different. I treat according to Traditional Chinese Medicine so I always look at the pattern that is presenting. Your best bet is to balance the graph and treat according to the laws and regulations of your country.

      Sincerely,

  2. this Acuherb can be taken alone without the patient having acupunture treatment as well?. or it is necessary for the patient to take the acuherb together withe acupunture treatment?

    1. There are many herbologists who use herbal formulas without acupuncture treatment. Each case is different. You may want to look at Gui Pi Pian–207 SP for heavy blood loss and spleen deficiency caused bleeding. You will need to find out what is causing the bleeding. If it is caused by blood stagnation, then you would want to choose a formula that was related to that pattern.

  3. Thank you for your clinical cases, insights and protocols… it’s inspired me in difficult cases with another perspective. I think you and Adrian are providing a phenomenal service with your educational approach, and I am looking into the purchase of an Acugraph system soon…and the estim unit first! Again, thank you both for all you do!

  4. me and my wife would love to take this formula sounds like exactly what we need , but i have read it will consume the YIN , the problem is how do we counteract the YIN deficiency like dry throat dry hair while on this formula ?
we just started to take this last week is it ok to combine it with Bu Zhong Yi Qi Pian—SP 201 ?

    1. Hello Mike,

The fact that you do not have any specific health concerns, I don’t think you need to worry about counteracting yin. But, it’s always a good rule of thumb to nourish yin with basic foods. Some of my favorites yin nourishing foods are are asparagus, mushrooms, berries, and coconut (the whole food, and the oil). I hope this helps!
