Some things have changed in my clinic for the BETTER. Does it mean that things were BAD before? Absolutely not. I did the best I could, given the resources I had at the time… Then I did better, because I could!
You’ve heard people use the old adage “back in my day”. I use it all the time with my kids!
- We never flew on airplanes. Our vacations involved a road trip, an ice chest, and sleeping bags on the floor of a tent or Grandma’s house.
- We didn’t have computers. Instead, we wrote our ideas on paper, annotated with 3×5 card and organized our life with a day planner.
- We didn’t have the internet. People learned from people, encyclopedias or the library.
Although I have fond memories of my younger years, and I still have great appreciation for the simple things in life, there is another part of me that is SO incredibly grateful and fascinated with the modern world of information and technology that I currently live in.
Honestly, for our generation, when it comes to the opportunities for learning and growth, everything has changed.
If we WANT to grow and expand, we can. If we want the newest and latest information from all around the world, it is at our fingertips. The box we used to live in no longer exists. The possibilities are now unlimited. We no longer live in a simple society. The world of information is at our fingertips.
With our collective minds, and the ability to explore, create and share knowledge, we are growing and learning at a rate I never dreamed of.
Now let me get to the subject at hand. A REALLY BIG change has happened in my clinic.
Let’s Talk Auriculotherapy!
When I first began using auriculotherapy, I did the best I could based on the resources I had available to me.
Phase 1:
It all started in college. A textbook, a teacher, and a handmade auricular chart. It was a nice simple addition to a body acupuncture treatment. I would make a logical decision on which points to choose based on symptomatology. Then I’d treat, and hope for the best.
Then things changed…
Phase 2:
Our world began changing. A text book, a chart on the wall and a handful of memorized “useful” auriculotherapy points were no longer the best resources. Modern practitioners wanted a more effective approach to treatment.

Without electrical detection, practitioners are left to “guess” which points might be effective for treatment based on symptoms and a list of “suggested” points.
Learning that ear points are electrically active when the patient has symptoms changed everything.

I’m Continually Growing
As always, the world of technology continues to grow… And so do I!
Here’s a phrase I often use when teaching:
“Today I’m teaching you what I am doing in my clinic NOW.”
“Talk to me 5 years from now, and I’ll probably be doing something different.”
Changes that I make in my clinic are ALWAYS due to progress. If I can get better results for my patients, then I’m all about moving on to the next phase.
Phase 3:
Recently I did a really cool experiment with auriculotherapy, which blew my mind. It. Changed. EVERYTHING.
Before, I share the experiment, let me give a little background information.
Measuring Progress: As you know, I use AcuGraph in my clinic. AcuGraph is way to objectively measure the changes that are happening in the acupuncture channels. Before each treatment, I measure the electrical skin resistance on the source point of each acupuncture channel.
The results of this test are then shown on a computer screen to share with the patient–showing which channels are excess, which are deficient, and whether there are imbalances between acupuncture channels on the left and right sides of the body. The key point to recognize here is that I can document PROGRESS from treatment to treatment.
Passing the Test: I’ve been using AcuGraph for a lot of years. I know that effective treatment changes the graph. People bring me new tools all the time and ask me if I’ll try it out and endorse it. The bottom line is this… I’m willing to try new tools and techniques. If I experiment with a tool or treatment strategy in my clinic, it has to pass the AcuGraph test. If the new strategy doesn’t change the graph, then I’m not interested.
Okay, now back to the experiment.

I was flabbergasted.

So I did.

Can I use the points select if I have a Pacemaker?
The use of electrical modalities is contraindicated when there is an implanted medical device, such as a pacemaker. So unfortunately, no, you can’t use the Pointoselect with a pacemaker.
